Labour Party Disassociates from Arabambi Amid Obi Credential Controversy

The Labour Party (LP) has clarified its position regarding Abayomi Arabambi, stating that he is no longer a member following his recent lawsuit against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, concerning the academic credentials of Peter Obi, the party's former presidential candidate.

In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the party expressed that it initially chose to remain silent on the issue when it surfaced on social media. However, the matter gained traction after being reported by mainstream media, prompting the LP to address the situation directly. Asogwa noted, "The party will not comment on the substance of the case, but it's important to clarify that Obi is also no longer a member of the Labour Party."

Asogwa highlighted that Arabambi's suspension from the party was part of a broader action taken against 25 members for various infractions related to anti-party activities. He stated, "The suspension was made public and widely reported by several mainstream media organisations across the country, including the said Abayomi Arabambi and a few other former members." This suspension was ratified during the National Convention of the Labour Party, solidifying the decision that Arabambi and the others ceased to be members.

The LP's response signals a clear distancing from Arabambi amid a sensitive political climate, particularly as the 2027 elections approach. The party's leadership appears keen to maintain its integrity and focus on its objectives, especially in light of the controversies surrounding Obi's academic qualifications.
