In a bold move ahead of the 2027 general elections, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has publicly urged former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to step down from his presidential ambitions in favor of Peter Obi. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kwankwaso emphasized that this request stems from their decades-long political relationship and a pressing need to foster a new political landscape in Nigeria.
Kwankwaso clarified that his call for Atiku’s withdrawal is not a reflection of animosity but rather a strategic decision for the benefit of the nation. “Well, yes,” he affirmed when asked if he was insisting on Atiku abandoning his presidential bid. This assertion highlights Kwankwaso’s commitment to reshaping Nigeria's political dynamics, suggesting that a collaborative approach with Obi could yield a more favorable outcome for the electorate.
During the interview, Kwankwaso recounted a recent visit from a group of Fulani leaders from across the country, which he seized as an opportunity to encourage them to speak with Atiku about stepping aside. He noted, “I had some people, coincidentally, a group of Fulanis from across the country who came for a courtesy visit to my house. And I thought it was an opportunity for me, really, to talk to them and ask them that they should create time before they go back to their towns and villages to talk to him.”
The former governor of Kano State reiterated that his motivations are rooted in a desire for unity and progress, rather than any personal grievances against Atiku. “I have known and worked with him for many years,” Kwankwaso stated, underscoring the respect he holds for his fellow politician. As Nigeria approaches another critical election cycle, Kwankwaso’s call may resonate with various factions within the political arena, potentially influencing the decisions of both candidates and their supporters.
