Kwankwaso Open to Reconciliation with Kano Governor Abba Yusuf

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has publicly stated his readiness to reconcile with Abba Yusuf, the current governor of Kano State. In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Kwankwaso reflected on the complexities of their relationship, which has soured following Yusuf's defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his alignment with Abdullahi Ganduje, Kwankwaso’s longstanding political rival.

Kwankwaso, who previously served as governor of Kano State, affirmed that he still harbors fondness for Yusuf, saying, “I didn’t abandon him... I still like him.” This statement comes as a surprise to many given the political tensions that have characterized their interactions since Yusuf transitioned from being a key ally within the Kwankwasiyya movement to a member of the opposing party. His remarks suggest a willingness to mend fences, should Yusuf reciprocate the sentiment.

The former governor, known for his conciliatory approach, elaborated on his philosophy of forgiveness, stating, “I am not a vengeful person and always forgive those who wronged me.” He recounted his past grievances with Ganduje, highlighting his ability to overlook past conflicts, which he believes is crucial for political harmony. “How many times did I have issues with Ganduje? He challenged me on several occasions,” Kwankwaso recalled, indicating his desire to focus on unity rather than division.

As Nigeria moves closer to the next election cycle, Kwankwaso’s comments could signal a potential thawing of relations in Kano’s political landscape. His readiness to reconcile with Yusuf may not only reshape their personal dynamics but could also influence the broader political discourse in the state as parties prepare for the challenges ahead.
