Operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS), alongside military and police forces, have successfully apprehended five suspected members of a criminal gang implicated in the kidnapping of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. This incident occurred on Nigeria's 66th Independence Day, October 1, 2026, along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway in Imo State, as the victims were en route to their orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.
The coordinated operations, which took place between October 10 and 14, targeted various locations in Rivers and Abia States. Sources indicate that the suspects were arrested following intelligence-led operations, although three other gang members managed to escape with injuries. A massive manhunt is currently underway to locate these individuals, who are believed to pose a continued threat to public safety.
Security agencies revealed that the arrests represent a critical breakthrough in efforts to combat the rising tide of kidnapping incidents in the region. The successful capture of these suspects is seen as a significant step towards dismantling the criminal network responsible for such abductions. A source from the security forces expressed relief over the development, highlighting the sustained efforts made by the agencies to restore safety and security in the area.
The initial abduction of the NYSC members drew widespread condemnation and sparked calls for enhanced security measures along major highways in Nigeria. The victims were ultimately rescued during a joint operation in Amakohia Ubi Village on October 7, 2026, underlining the importance of collaborative efforts among security agencies in addressing the menace of kidnapping in the country.
