The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a strong demand for the release of Igbo individuals who they claim are unlawfully detained across various facilities in Nigeria. This demand follows the recent release of four suspected IPOB members, who had spent four years in detention, which the group argues underscores a broader pattern of systemic injustice against the Igbo people.
In a statement released by IPOB's spokesperson, the group emphasized that the continued detention of many Igbos without trial or substantial evidence is a violation of their rights and a reflection of the ongoing marginalization faced by the Igbo community. The spokesperson stated, "The release of these four individuals is a glimmer of hope, but it also highlights the plight of many others who remain behind bars unjustly. We will not rest until all unlawfully detained Igbos are freed."
The issue of unlawful detention has been a contentious topic in Nigeria, particularly in relation to the activities of IPOB and its quest for self-determination. Critics of the government have pointed to these detentions as part of a larger narrative of oppression against specific ethnic groups, particularly in the southeastern region of the country.
IPOB's recent call for action seeks not only the release of detained individuals but also aims to raise awareness of the alleged human rights abuses that have occurred in the name of national security. The group is mobilizing support from local and international human rights organizations to address these issues, arguing that every citizen deserves due process, irrespective of their political beliefs.
“We will not rest until all unlawfully detained Igbos are freed,” said IPOB spokesperson, emphasizing the group's commitment to fighting for justice.
