The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported that a staggering 29,314 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are currently uncollected in Taraba State, raising alarms about voter participation ahead of the 2027 elections. The announcement was made by Sa’ad Idris, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Taraba, during a stakeholders' meeting held in Jalingo, where key issues regarding election preparedness and collaboration were discussed.
Idris emphasized the importance of addressing the uncollected PVCs, noting that it is crucial for ensuring that eligible voters can exercise their rights in the forthcoming elections. He called for enhanced collaboration among political parties, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to increase awareness and encourage residents to collect their PVCs promptly.
“It is essential that we mobilize our communities to understand the significance of having their PVCs ahead of the elections,” Idris stated. “Every eligible voter must be empowered to participate in the democratic process, and that starts with collecting their voter cards.”
The meeting also served as a platform to discuss logistical challenges and strategies for ensuring a smooth electoral process. Stakeholders expressed their commitment to work together to raise awareness and facilitate the distribution of PVCs, which are vital for electoral participation.
As the 2027 elections approach, the emphasis on voter education and engagement will be critical to fostering a robust democratic process in Nigeria, particularly in regions like Taraba, where voter turnout has historically been a concern.
