In a passionate address at the 2nd Session of the 7th Synod of the Anglican Communion, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has implored citizens to remain vigilant against the financial and material inducements often offered by politicians during election seasons. Speaking on behalf of the governor, his Chief of Staff, Dr. Caleb Ajagba, delivered a message that resonated with the congregation at All Saints Anglican Cathedral in Aba, highlighting the critical importance of prioritizing the state’s long-term development over fleeting material benefits.
Governor Otti expressed concern that many of the politicians who had contributed to Abia's challenges over the past 24 years were now resurfacing to seek the support of voters. He stated, “The people that created a problem that God now had to answer your prayer by sending someone after His own heart, are all over again.” His warning served as a reminder to voters about the detrimental impact of accepting small bribes, such as ₦5,000 or bags of rice, which could jeopardize the state's future.
The governor's message emphasized the importance of making informed choices at the ballot box, urging voters not to sacrifice their destiny for immediate gains. He cautioned, “Don’t use the ₦5,000, the ₦10,000, the wrapper or the rice they will give you and close the destiny of Abians for the next four years.” This sentiment underscores the potential long-term consequences of short-sighted electoral decisions.
Additionally, Otti called upon Christians to be discerning of politicians who, after neglecting the Church, now seek its support as elections approach. He encouraged the faithful to remain steadfast and vigilant, recognizing the significance of their spiritual influence during this crucial period. “The season is here again,” he reminded attendees, reinforcing the need for a united front against political manipulation.
