In a recent address during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council in Jos, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang underscored the challenging economic landscape faced by President Bola Tinubu upon assuming office in 2023. Mutfwang described the nation as being on the verge of economic collapse, citing difficulties in servicing external debts and the adverse effects on international business operations.

“Where did President Tinubu meet Nigeria in 2023? He met Nigeria tottering on the brink of collapse; Nigeria that could not service its external debts; Nigeria that would not even allow businesses outside the country to take their proceeds back home,” Mutfwang stated. He illustrated the severity of the situation by noting that some international airlines ceased operations to Nigeria due to the inability to repatriate funds.

The governor further elaborated on the precarious state of the nation’s external reserves, revealing a dramatic decline from over $40 billion to just above $3 billion. However, he expressed optimism about the current administration's efforts, claiming that external reserves have now surpassed $50 billion, indicating a recovery. “Today, by the grace of God, we have a healthy external reserve of over $50 billion,” he said.

Mutfwang also addressed political stability, declaring that there is no vacancy in the Presidential Villa or the Plateau Government House for the 2027 elections, while dismissing any notions of a 'rainbow coalition' among opposition parties. He urged Plateau residents to rally behind Tinubu and support his administration’s economic reforms.
