In a remarkable tribute during the 30th anniversary celebration of Bayelsa State, Governor Douye Diri credited the late military ruler Sani Abacha with liberating the Ijaw people by creating the state in 1996. Diri's remarks came amid a ceremony that recognized the contributions of former President Goodluck Jonathan and 61 other notable figures to the development and progress of Bayelsa.
Diri emphasized that the establishment of Bayelsa State was a pivotal moment in the fight against the historical marginalization of the Ijaw people. He stated, "Abacha's decision to create Bayelsa was a defining action that freed us from decades of oppression and gave us a voice in the political landscape of Nigeria." This statement underscores the complex legacy of Abacha, whose rule is often remembered for its authoritarianism.
The anniversary celebration, attended by dignitaries from within and outside the state, also served as a platform to reflect on the achievements and challenges facing Bayelsa over the past three decades. Governor Diri called for unity among the Ijaw and a renewed commitment to the development of the state, urging citizens to build on the foundations laid by their predecessors.
In addition to honoring Jonathan, who served as the state’s governor before ascending to the presidency, the event featured awards for individuals who have made significant contributions to various sectors in Bayelsa. The commemoration aimed to foster a sense of pride in the state's history and accomplishments while looking forward to future growth.
