Former Cross River PDP Chairman Raises Concerns Over Party's 2027 Election Viability
Venatius Ikem, the former chairman of the Cross River chapter of the PDP, expresses skepticism regarding the party's prospects in the upcoming 2027 elections, citing internal fragmentation and a lack of visibility for its candidate Sandy Onor. His remarks highlight significant challenges the PDP may face in competing against the ruling APC.

Venatius Ikem, who previously led the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, has voiced serious concerns about the party's ability to mount a credible challenge to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming 2027 general elections. In a recent statement, Ikem described the PDP's current organizational structure as fragmented, which he believes undermines the party's electoral prospects.
Ikem specifically pointed to the party's presidential candidate, Sandy Onor, who has received backing from Governor Nyesom Wike, as being politically invisible. He remarked, "With a candidate who is not resonating with the electorate, the PDP's chances of winning in 2027 are significantly diminished." This sentiment reflects broader anxieties within the party regarding its ability to unify and effectively campaign against the APC, which has maintained a stronghold on power in Nigeria.
The former chairman's comments come at a time when the PDP is grappling with internal divisions and a lack of coherent strategy ahead of the elections. Analysts suggest that without a strong and visible leadership, the party risks losing ground in key states, including Cross River, where local dynamics play a critical role in electoral outcomes.
"The PDP must address its internal conflicts and present a united front if it hopes to challenge the APC effectively. Otherwise, we may see a repeat of past electoral defeats," Ikem stated.
As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the PDP faces a crucial test of its resilience and adaptability. The party's ability to rally its members and strengthen its grassroots support will be pivotal in determining whether it can reclaim its status as a dominant political force in Nigeria.
