In a significant recognition of legal excellence, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, currently serving as Nigeria's High Commissioner to South Africa, has been conferred with the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel of Nigeria (SCN) by the Nigerian Law Society (NLS). This honor was bestowed at the society's 2026 Annual General Conference, themed "Justice for All: Non-Litigation Nigerian Law Graduates Through the Blue Silks (SCN), BOSCON and the NLS." Alongside Fani-Kayode, four other prominent legal practitioners, including Seyi Tinubu, Olufunmilayo Osifuye, Ihudiebube Chukwumdi, and Alabi Olalekan Adigun, also received this distinguished title.

During the event, Fani-Kayode delivered an impactful acceptance speech through his Special Adviser on Media and Executive Assistant, Lizzy Okoji. He passionately advocated for the protection of the rights and dignity of all Nigerians, both domestically and abroad. He asserted that justice should be universally accessible and should not be influenced by an individual's socio-economic or political status. "Justice in its truest form must never be selective. It must not be reserved for the privileged, the powerful or the politically connected. It must be accessible to all," he declared.

Reflecting on his diplomatic role in South Africa, Fani-Kayode underscored the importance of human rights, especially in light of the challenges faced by Nigerians in the diaspora. He recounted his initial engagement in South Africa, a town hall meeting with the Nigerian community, where he attentively listened to their concerns and reassured them of his commitment to their welfare. This experience, he noted, has reinforced his advocacy for justice and human dignity.

The conferment of the SCN rank is not only a personal achievement for Fani-Kayode and his fellow recipients but also a testament to the evolving landscape of legal practice in Nigeria. As the NLS continues to recognize and celebrate legal excellence, the call for equitable access to justice remains a significant discourse, especially in a society where disparities often dictate the quality of legal representation.
