The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commissioned two solar mini-grids in Kano State, a project that promises to significantly enhance electricity access for 2,214 homes and businesses in underserved communities. This initiative, part of the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) programme under the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP), is funded by the World Bank and aims to address the pressing energy needs of rural areas.

Located in Ballagaza within the Gabasawa Local Government Area and Marayar Rogo in Warawa Local Government Area, the solar mini-grids boast a combined installed capacity of 268.4 kilowatt-peak (kWp). Specifically, the Ballagaza facility has a capacity of 195.2 kWp, providing 1,564 electricity connections, while the Marayar Rogo installation, with a capacity of 73.2 kWp, has connected 650 homes and businesses.

During the commissioning ceremony, Chief Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, emphasized the government's commitment to renewable energy investment and the importance of private sector collaboration in expanding electricity access. He stated, "These projects demonstrate the crucial role of renewable energy in improving the lives of our citizens. The Federal Government will continue to foster partnerships that facilitate the delivery of reliable and sustainable electricity, especially in rural areas."

The introduction of these mini-grids is expected to not only provide electricity to households but also support local businesses, thereby fostering an environment conducive to economic growth and development. The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has highlighted that the mini-grids will also support productive activities, enhancing livelihoods and creating new opportunities for the communities involved.
