Federal Government Dismisses Rumors of Electricity Tariff Increase — The Abuja Times Newsroom

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has firmly stated that the Federal Government has no intentions of increasing electricity tariffs. Speaking in Ibadan while inaugurating a 17.7MW hybrid solar mini-grid project, Tegbe addressed circulating rumors on social media regarding a potential tariff hike, labeling them as misinformation and urging the public to disregard such claims.

“I want to say this clearly and without ambiguity: there is no plan to increase electricity tariffs,” Tegbe affirmed. He highlighted that the government's focus is on establishing a power sector that operates continuously, aiming to enhance the overall electricity supply landscape in Nigeria. This initiative aligns with the establishment of three Energy Zones: the Lagos-Ogun corridor, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor, and the Benin-Enugu-Port Harcourt corridor.

The newly launched 17.7MW project is designed to benefit multiple communities across Akinyele, Ido, Ibadan North, Egbeda, and Lagelu Local Government Areas in Oyo State. According to Tegbe, the hybrid mini-grid will not only improve electricity supply to households and businesses but also reduce reliance on generators, thereby fostering a conducive environment for investment and job creation in these communities.

In his remarks, Tegbe acknowledged the leadership of President Bola Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda, as well as the contributions of various stakeholders including the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Paras Energy, the World Bank, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), and the Oyo State Government. His statement signals a renewed commitment to enhancing Nigeria's energy infrastructure while dispelling doubts over tariff adjustments.
