FCDA Official Sentenced to Seven Years for Land Fraud
A court has sentenced a former official of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to seven years in prison for defrauding a land buyer by selling non-existent properties. The case highlights ongoing issues of corruption and misconduct within urban planning departments in Nigeria.

A recent court ruling has seen a former official of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) sentenced to seven years in prison for defrauding a land buyer. The accused, Mr. Eselebor, was found guilty of misrepresenting several plots of land as legitimate properties despite lacking any valid titles to transfer ownership.
This case sheds light on the persistent challenges of corruption within Nigeria's urban planning sector, where officials are sometimes implicated in fraudulent activities that undermine public trust. The court heard that Mr. Eselebor exploited his position within the Department of Urban and Regional Planning to deceive unsuspecting buyers, leading to significant financial losses for the victims.
Judge D. A. Kolo, in delivering the verdict, emphasized the need for accountability in public service, stating, "Such fraudulent practices cannot be tolerated, especially from those in positions of authority who are meant to serve the public interest." The prosecution underscored the importance of deterring similar offenses to protect potential land buyers and uphold the integrity of land transactions.
“This ruling serves as a reminder that public officials must adhere to ethical standards and be held accountable for their actions,” said a spokesperson for the FCDA.
As urban development continues to expand in Nigeria's capital, this case serves as a critical warning about the need for stringent oversight and regulation within the real estate sector, ensuring that buyers are protected from fraudulent practices.
