Experts Call for Urgent Action to Address Nigeria's Youth Mental Health Crisis — The Abuja Times Newsroom

Nigeria's youth are grappling with a significant mental health crisis, prompting a coalition of leading psychiatrists, public health experts, and advocates to demand urgent measures to address the escalating issues. The 4th Vanguard Mental Health Summit, set to take place on October 9 at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, will focus on this pressing concern, particularly highlighting the effects of substance use, suicide, social isolation, and the pressures stemming from social media and technology.

The summit, themed "Advancing Youth Mental Health in Nigeria," will delve into the widening gaps in mental healthcare services for young Nigerians. With a sub-theme of "Mental Health in a Digital Age: Navigating Social Media, Technology and Wellbeing," the event aims to promote discussions around the necessity for early intervention, accessible mental health services, and robust support systems for youth.

Dr. Veronica Oluyemisi Nyamali, the President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria and Chief Consultant Psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, will lead the discourse on mental healthcare, addiction, and suicide prevention. Her expertise will provide valuable insights into the urgent need for comprehensive mental health strategies tailored for the youth demographic.

“The mental health crisis among our youth cannot be ignored any longer. We must implement effective strategies that address these issues head-on,” Dr. Nyamali stated ahead of the summit.

In addition to Dr. Nyamali, the summit will feature contributions from prominent figures such as Prof. Taiwo Lateef Sheikh, who specializes in psychiatry and psychopharmacology, and Prof. Mashudat Bello-Mojeed, a distinguished child psychiatrist. Their collective efforts aim to raise awareness and advocate for policy changes that prioritize mental health in Nigeria's youth.
