A recent discovery of crude oil in the Okpe-Isoko community of Delta State has ignited a fierce dispute involving the Adhakpor family, who assert that a purported lease agreement made with Sterling Global Limited is invalid. The family has publicly denounced the agreement, claiming that individuals involved in the negotiations lacked the authority to act on their behalf.
In an official statement, the Adhakpor family emphasized that they had not authorized anyone to negotiate or finalize any agreements concerning their land. They specifically stated, "No individual could validly bind us to any agreement without a specific mandate duly granted by us." This declaration underscores the family's commitment to maintaining control over their property and rejecting any unauthorized dealings.
The family further clarified that their duly elected representatives are the only individuals authorized to engage in discussions or sign documents regarding the land. They expressed their concerns over the implications of the purported lease, warning that any agreements made without their consent would not be recognized as legitimate.
"We disassociate ourselves from any agreement, commitment, or undertaking purportedly entered into by persons acting without our express authorization," the family stated, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
As the situation develops, tensions within the community are expected to escalate, with the family urging all parties to respect their rights and interests. The discovery of oil, while potentially lucrative, has led to a complex legal and social conflict that could have lasting implications for the community and its stakeholders.
