ABAKALIKI — In a commendable initiative aimed at improving healthcare access in Ebonyi State, the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) and the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) have launched a two-month free medical treatment program for local residents. This program, which commenced on the premises of the teaching hospital, seeks to ensure that essential healthcare services are available to those who need them most.
According to Prof. Jesse Uneke, Vice-Chancellor of DUFUHS, the initiative is designed to support broader efforts to enhance healthcare delivery in the region. He emphasized that the program would focus on treating common health conditions such as malaria, cholera, and various non-communicable diseases, thereby promoting early detection and treatment among the population.
“This treatment is not limited to some persons; it is open for everyone, irrespective of your tribe,”
Uneke stated, highlighting the inclusive nature of the initiative. By reaching out to the community, the university and teaching hospital aim to strengthen their relationship with residents, many of whom face difficulties accessing quality healthcare. This program is viewed not only as a healthcare initiative but as a vital part of the institutions' responsibility to give back to society.
Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the initiative reflects the commitment of DUFUHS and DUFUTH to improve the health and wellbeing of the people in their catchment area. By addressing healthcare disparities, the program aspires to make a significant impact on the lives of those who might otherwise struggle to afford necessary medical care.
