On the occasion of Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, prominent civil society organizations have called for significant reforms aimed at improving the living conditions and rights of citizens. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) have each released statements highlighting the urgent need for the government to ensure that its reform efforts translate into real benefits for the populace.

In their messages, the organizations underscored that while Nigeria has made strides since gaining independence, the challenges facing citizens—such as poverty, insecurity, and inadequate access to basic services—remain pressing. The NHRC urged the government to prioritize human rights in its reform agenda, emphasizing that the protection of these rights is fundamental to fostering a just and equitable society.

RULAAC reinforced this sentiment, stating that reforms should not merely exist on paper but must be effectively implemented to bring about meaningful change. “True independence is not just about political freedom; it is about the ability of citizens to enjoy their rights fully and live dignified lives,” the organization stated in its message.

Similarly, CISLAC called for a comprehensive approach to governance that includes transparency and accountability. “As we celebrate our independence, we must reflect on the necessity for a government that is responsive to the needs of its people,” they emphasized. The organizations collectively urged the Nigerian government to listen to the voices of citizens and ensure that reforms lead to tangible improvements in their daily lives.
