Chief Daniel Orbih: A Legacy of Political Resilience in Nigeria

Chief Daniel Osi Orbih, affectionately known as Kulukulu 1, passed away on August 31 at the age of 64, leaving behind a legacy as one of Nigeria's most determined political actors. The announcement of his death, made by his family, did not reveal the cause, but it highlighted the profound impact he had on Nigerian politics and his family's enduring bond.

Orbih's political journey began long before he became synonymous with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He initially aligned himself with the All Peoples Party (APP) and served as the running mate to Lucky Imasuen in the 1999 Edo governorship election. This early involvement in politics laid the groundwork for his later association with Chief Tony Anenih, a formidable strategist of the PDP, under whose mentorship he would rise to prominence.

His family's political lineage also played a significant role in shaping his career. Records from his Ogbona community reveal that his father, Chief M.C.K. Orbih, was elected to the House of Representatives in 1959, illustrating a tradition of public service that was passed down through generations. As Orbih transitioned to the PDP, he became a leading voice for the party, particularly after assuming leadership of the Edo chapter in 2008, during a time when the PDP was seeking to regain its foothold in the state.

“Politics was in his DNA; he carried the mantle of his family’s legacy with pride and determination,” a close associate remarked about Orbih's commitment to public service.

During his tenure, Orbih faced numerous challenges, including the PDP's loss of control to Adams Oshiomhole's administration. However, his steadfastness and dedication to the party and its ideals earned him respect across political lines, establishing him as a warrior who never truly left the battlefield of Nigerian politics.
