In a recent interview, Chief Ademola Folarin, the General Secretary of Afenifere, a prominent pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, addressed ongoing speculations regarding a potential breakup within the group. He firmly stated, "There is only one Afenifere," dismissing claims of division as unfounded and emphasizing the organization's commitment to unity amidst political turbulence.

Folarin elaborated on the leadership challenges facing Afenifere, particularly regarding the endorsement of political candidates. He revealed that while former leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo supported Peter Obi in the 2023 elections without prior notification to the group, the current leadership, under Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu for the upcoming 2027 elections. This endorsement has raised questions about internal dynamics and the group’s direction.

When asked about the adversarial nature of Nigerian politics, Folarin acknowledged that while such rivalry is a fundamental aspect of democracy, it can be detrimental. He remarked, "Adversarial politics is one of the hallmarks of democracy. You have to destroy one party in order for you to rise." He criticized the pitfalls of democratic governance, suggesting it often leads to instability and conflict, akin to what is observed in various global democracies.

Despite the challenges, Folarin remains optimistic about Afenifere's role in shaping Yoruba politics. He asserted that the organization would continue to strive for unity and effective representation of the Yoruba people, reinforcing its historical significance as a voice for the region. As the political landscape evolves, Afenifere's ability to navigate these tensions will be critical to its future influence.
