The Zamfara chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a bold step in advocating for the review of what it describes as exorbitant political campaign permit fees imposed by the state government. In a statement issued in Gusau, ADC Chairman Kabiru Garba expressed the party's concerns regarding the financial barriers these fees could create for political participation, especially in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
Garba highlighted a letter dated September 25 from the Zamfara Urban and Regional Planning Board (ZUREPB), which outlined the approved rules and associated permit fees for political activities in the state. While acknowledging the government's responsibility to regulate public spaces and ensure orderly conduct during political events, he stressed that the current fees could impede lawful political engagement.
“We consider these provisions deserving of urgent review, clarification and consultation with political parties and other stakeholders,”
Garba stated, underscoring the importance of inclusivity in the democratic process. He called for an immediate reassessment of the permit fees to foster a more equitable environment for all political parties vying for public support.
The ADC's appeal is an important reminder of the need for transparency and fairness in governance, particularly as Nigeria approaches a critical electoral period. The party's leadership is hopeful that the Zamfara government will heed their call and engage in meaningful dialogue with political stakeholders to refine the existing fee structure, thus ensuring justice in political participation.
